Oscar Benjamin "Ossie" Schectman (1919- 2013) was an American professional basketball player. He is credited with having scored the first basket in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which would later become the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The high five is a hand gesture that occurs when two people simultaneously raise one hand each, about head-high, and push, slide, or slap the flat of their palm against the flat palm of the other person. There are many origin stories of the high five,[1] but the two most documented candidates are Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers professional baseball team on October 2, 1977, and Wiley Brown and Derek Smith of the Louisville Cardinals men's college basketball team during the 1978–1979 season

The 1984 draft is generally considered to be one of the greatest in NBA history. Hakeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie were drafted before Michael Jordan. Charles Barkley was drafted 5th and John Stockton 16th. All of them, except for Sam Bowie, have been inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

A. C. Green played in more consecutive games (1192) than any other player in NBA history. He had to overcome several injuries on his way to the streak, like the one from 1995-96 season when he was intentionally elbowed in the face. Green lost two teeth and suffered a head injury, which forced him to wear a protective mask, and playing only a couple of minutes a game for a few weeks.

During the Bill Russell era, the Celtics won 11 NBA titles in 13 seasons between 1957 and 1969. They won the championship every year in the 1960s except for 1967 when they lost in the Division Finals to the eventual champions Philadelphia 76ers.

The NBA Hall of Famer is ranked second in the history in points scored (behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), and holds the records for most free throws attempted and made. He was known as "The Mailman" for his consistent delivery. Pete Maravich was nicknamed "The Pistol, David Robinson "The Admiral, and George Gervin "The Iceman".

Derrick Rose was drafted first overall by his hometown Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA draft. In 2011, at age 22, he became the youngest player to win the NBA MVP Award and the first Chicago Bulls player to win it since Michael Jordan in 1998.

Kobe Bryant declared for the NBA draft upon high school graduation and was selected in the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, who traded him to the Lakers. He holds the NBA record for the most seasons playing with one franchise for an entire career and is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Shaquille O'Neal is widely considered one of the greatest players in NBA history. At 2.16 m tall and 147 kg, he was one of the heaviest players ever to play in the NBA. He has won four Championship rings, including three in a row with Los Angeles Lakers (2000, 2001 and 2002).

Both women and men's teams have dominated basketball at the Summer Olympics, winning 23 out of 30 possible gold medals. In 5 out of 7 remaining they finished second or third.
