Lake Chagan, Kazakhstan, is a lake created by the Chagan nuclear test fired on January 15, 1965, part of the Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy. A 140 kiloton device was placed in a 178-metre (584 ft) deep hole in the dry bed of the Chagan River. The blast created a crater 400 m (1,300 ft) across and 100 m (330 ft) deep with a lip height of 20 to 38 m (66 to 125 ft).; it is often referred to as "Atomic Lake".

Duga (Russian: Дуга) was a Soviet over-the-horizon (OTH) radar system used as part of the Soviet missile defense early-warning radar network. The system operated from July 1976 to December 1989. ... NATO military intelligence had already given it the reporting name STEEL WORK or STEEL YARD.

The NORAD command center built for the film War Games was the most expensive set ever constructed up to that time, built at the cost of one million dollars. The producers were not allowed into the actual NORAD command center, so they had to imagine what it was like.

November 21, 1990 – The day that signaled the"Cold War" end.. The leaders in Europe and North America in turn signed the Paris Charter for a new Europe. Peace and Human Rights were the themes of the document. It’s goal was a Europe that would be free, prosperous and at peace with itself. Mitterrand emphasized that the Paris Charter commits the countries to more than platitudes.

After the end of World War II, Berlin was divided into four occupational zones: Soviet, American, French and British. Later, the three zones of western allies were joined to form West Berlin. With about two million inhabitants, West Berlin had the highest number of residents of any city in Cold War-era Germany.

On 8 April 1941, the United States occupied Greenland in order to defend it against a possible invasion by Germany. After the end of WW2, the United States wished to keep the island for strategic reasons and offered $100,000,000, but Denmark refused to sell.

The Greek Civil War, was fought from 1946 to 1949 between the Greek government army—backed by the UK and US — and the communist Democratic Army of Greece, backed by Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania. It is estimated that 158,000 people were killed.

In response to the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, 14 Eastern Bloc countries including the Soviet Union boycotted the Games. The IOC awarded Los Angeles the Games by default, as no other city was interested.
