The Aokigahara forest has a historical reputation as a home to yūrei: ghosts of the dead in Japanese mythology. In recent years, Aokigahara has become internationally known as "the Suicide Forest", one of the world's most prevalent suicide sites, and signs at the head of some trails urge suicidal visitors to think of their families and contact a suicide prevention association.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is spread by daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes. Its name comes from the Ziika Forest of Uganda, where the virus was first isolated in 1947. Zika virus is related to the dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile viruses. From 2007 to 2016, the virus spread eastward, across the Pacific Ocean to the Americas, leading to the 2015–16 Zika virus epidemic.

The Atlantic Forest (Portuguese: Mata Atlântica) is a South American forest that extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Over 85% of the original area has been deforested, threatening many plant and animal species with extinction.

Among developed countries, Japan has one of the highest levels of afforestation, over 68% of the area - being surpassed only by Sweden and Finland.

Firs differ from other conifers in having erect, cylindrical cones pointing upwards. In contrast to spruces, even large fir cones do not hang, but are raised like candles.
