Valletta is the capital city of Malta. Located in the south east of the island. Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe. Valletta's 16th-century buildings were constructed by the Knights Hospitaller. The city is Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture. The city was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980

St Paul's Island, also known as Selmunett, is a small island off Selmun near the north-east of the main island of Malta. The Acts of the Apostles tell the story of how Paul the Apostle was shipwrecked on an island which Chapter 28 identifies as Malta while on his way to Rome to face charges. Traditionally, St. Paul's Bay and St Paul's Island are identified as the location for this shipwreck.

Of the mentioned Mediterranean islands, the southernmost is Cyprus. This island officially belongs to Asia and is located about 70 km from Turkey and 100 km from Syria.

Strombolian eruptions are distinct bursts of fluid lava from the mouth of a magma-filled summit conduit. The explosions usually occur every few minutes at regular or irregular intervals. The explosions of lava, which can reach heights of hundreds of meters, are caused by the bursting of large bubbles of gas, which travel upward in the magma-filled conduit until they reach the open air.

The maritime republics of the Mediterranean Basin were thalassocratic city-states which flourished in Italy and Dalmatia during the Middle Ages. The best known among the maritime republics are Venice, Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi. The Kingdom of Naples was a state created as a result of the War of the Sicilian Vespers in 1302.

Montenegro joined NATO on 5 June 2017. A poll in July 2015 found that 36.6 percent support membership, to 37.3 percent against, with sharp divisions between ethnic groups: 71.2 percent of Montenegrin Albanians and 68 percent of Montenegrin Bosniaks support membership, while only 11.3 percent of Montenegrin Serbs do.

Algeria has access to only one Mediterranean Sea. Portugal and Morocco have access to the Atlantic Ocean, while Romania to the Black Sea.

The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy. It is named for the Tyrrhenian people, identified since the 6th century BCE with the Etruscans of Italy.

Through its history, Sicily was ruled by Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Normans, Germans, French, and Aragon. However, it has never been conquered by the Osman Empire despite its vicinity.
