In most Spanish-speaking countries, the custom is for people to have two surnames, a paternal one (after the father) and a maternal one (after the mother). Thus, for instance, Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas Fernández has Iker as his given name, Casillas as his first surname, and Fernández as his second.
