Popocatépetl is 70 km (43 mi) southeast of Mexico City, from where it can be seen regularly, depending on atmospheric conditions. Until recently, the volcano was one of three tall peaks in Mexico to contain glaciers. It is linked to the Iztaccihuatl volcano to the north by the high saddle known as the Paso de Cortés.

Popocatépetl (znany też jako El Popo) to czynny stratowulkan w Meksykuj o wysokości 5452 m n.p.m. Znajduje się około 70 km na południowy wschód od miasta Meksyk. Jest drugim pod względem wysokości szczytem Meksyku po Pico de Orizaba. Nazwa Popocatépetl wywodzi się z języka Azteków i oznacza "dymiącą górę", co odnosi się do gęstych chmur dymu wydobywających się z krateru w czasie wzmożonej aktywności.
