They don’t belong to the UK, they are not “overseas territories” but “crown dependencies” as is the Isle of Man. Their connection with the British crown is historical. As the Crown dependencies are not sovereign states, the power to pass legislation affecting the islands ultimately rests with the government of the United Kingdom.
