The electric tattooing machine was officially patented on Dec. 8th, 1891 by a New York tattoo artist named Samuel O'Reilly. He began tattooing in New York around the mid-1880s. O'Reilly's machine was based on the rotary technology of Thomas Edison's autographic printing pen.

Samuel O'Reilly wynalazł pistolet do tatuażu w 1890 roku. W uchwycie pistoletu w kształcie kolby umieścił pneumatyczne pióro Thomasa Alvy Edisona. Patent uzyskał w 1891 roku. Prowadził swój salon aż do śmierci w 1908 roku. Silniczek pozwalał na wykonywanie aż 50 nakłuć na sekundę.
