What was the Bessemer converter used for?

The Bessemer bulb is a cylindrical refractory vessel used to make steel from pig iron. The process is named after its developer Henry Bessemer, who published it in England after the mid-19th century. The Bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron before the development of the open hearth furnace.
