The Bessemer bulb is a cylindrical refractory vessel used to make steel from pig iron. The process is named after its developer Henry Bessemer, who published it in England after the mid-19th century. The Bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron before the development of the open hearth furnace.

Pierwszym przemysłowym konwertorem do produkcji stali była gruszka Bessemera, którą uruchomił w roku 1856 Henry Bessemer. Celem konwertora było usuwanie niepożądanych domieszek z ciekłego metalu poprzez ich selektywne utlenianie.
