After the failed coup known as the "Beer Hall Putsch", Hitler was arrested on 11 November 1923 for high treason and sentenced to five years imprisonment at Landsberg Prison. He was pardoned by the Bavarian Supreme Court and released from jail on 20 December 1924. While at Landsberg, Hitler dictated most of the first volume of Mein Kampf (My Struggle) to his deputy, Rudolf Hess.
