Which domestic animal has the largest number of breeds?

Sheep husbandry is practiced throughout the majority of the inhabited world, and has been fundamental to many civilizations. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN) identified 1229 breeds of sheep as of 2006. Almost all sheep are classified as being best suited to furnishing a certain product: wool, meat, milk, hides, or a combination in a dual-purpose breed.
