Ernest Rutherford, (1871–1937), was a New Zealand-born British physicist. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday. He conducted research that led to the first "splitting" of the atom in 1917 in a nuclear reaction between nitrogen and alpha particles, in which he also discovered the proton.

Ernest Rutherford, brytyjski fizyk, laureat Nagrody Nobla. W 1909 r. wykonał słynny „eksperyment Rutherforda”, zaliczany do dziesięciu najpiękniejszych eksperymentów z fizyki. Cząstki alfa przepuścił przez bardzo cienką złotą folię. W ten sposób odkrył, że cała masa oraz dodatni ładunek atomu skupiony jest w bardzo niewielkiej objętości i potwierdził eksperymentalnie istnienie jądra atomowego.
