Chitons are molluscs and are related to slugs and snails (gastropods), mussels and oysters (bivalves), and squids and octopuses (cephalopods). Within the phylum Mollusca, chitons belong to a distinct group known as the Polyplacophora.

Do którego typu bezkręgowców należą chitony?

Chitony, wielotarczowce (Polyplacophora) to gromada morskich mięczaków obejmująca około 1000 gatunków. Nazwa gromady wywodzi się od greckiego słowa chitōn, które oznacza tunikę i dało też początek nazwie chityna. Chityna to polisacharyd glukozy, z którego są zbudowane szkielety zewnętrzne stawonogów. U chitonów zauważalna jest jeszcze pierwotna metameria (segmentacja), która zaniknęła w pozostałych gromadach mięczaków.
