Lauda suffered extensive scarring form the burns to his head during the accident at 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring - since then, he always wore a cap. A week before the race, Lauda urged his fellow drivers to boycott it because of the poor safety arrangements. Most of the other drivers voted against the boycott and the race went ahead.
