Las Meninas, created in 1656, is the most well known work of Velázquez, considered his magnum opus. It depicts one of the infantas, Margaret Theresa, and the title translates to "The maids of Honour". Yet, it is unclear as to who or what is the true subject - perhaps the painter himself?
