In Attic drama, the coryphaeus was the leader of the chorus. Hence the term is used for the chief or leader of any company or movement. The coryphaeus spoke for all the rest, whenever the chorus took part in the action, in quality of a person of the drama, during the course of the acts.

Koryfeusz był przewodnikiem chóru w teatrze starogreckim. Wygłaszał on najtrudniejsze kwestie oraz wyznaczał chórzystom tempo i wysokość dźwięku. Obecnie tym terminem określa się wybitnych działaczy na polu nauki, sztuki czy innej dziedziny. Istnieje także nagroda o nazwie Koryfeusz Muzyki Polskiej która jest przyznawana od 1 października 2011 roku.
