Sirima Bandaranaike became the Sri Lanka National Party's leader, after her husband was assassinated by a Buddhist monk who opposed his advocacy of Western medicine over traditional cures. She led her party to win the July 1960 elections and became prime minister, the first female head of government in the world. During her political career, she served as prime minister three times.
