The Galilean moons are the four largest moons of Jupiter—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. They were first seen by Galileo Galilei in December 1609 or January 1610, and recognized by him as satellites of Jupiter in March 1610.

In 1516, Leonardo entered the service of king Francis I of France, being given the use of the manor house Clos Lucé near the king's residence at the royal Château d'Amboise. The Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando II, wished to bury Galileo in the main body of the Basilica of Santa Croce, and to erect a marble mausoleum in his honour. These plans were dropped after Pope Urban VIII had been condemned Galileo for "vehement suspicion of heresy". He was buried in a small room next to the novices' chapel. However, in 1737 he was reburied in the main body of the basilica, and a monument had been erected there in his honour.

Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452, in a farmhouse about 3 kilometers from the town of Vinci, near Florence. His full name was "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci", which means "Leonardo, son of Piero, of Vinci".

Leonardo's writings are mostly in mirror-image cursive. The reason may have been more a practical expediency than for reasons of secrecy as is often suggested. Since Leonardo wrote with his left hand, it is probable that it was easier for him to write from right to left.
