They were intentionally left by parents. 'Hansel and Gertel' is an old German fairy tale, recorded (but not created) by the Grimm brothers. The practice of leaving children to fend for themselves, as well as cannibalistic practices (the behaviour of witch) were not uncommon in Medieval Europe during famine.

Snow White. In Grimms' Fairy Tales their names weren't known. Disney named them: Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Dopey.
What was Mickey Mouse's original name?
Mortimer Mouse. In 1925, Hugh Harman drew some sketches of mice around a photograph of Walt Disney. These inspired Ub Iwerks to create a new mouse character for Disney. "Mortimer Mouse" had been Disney's original name for the character before his wife, Lillian, convinced him to change it, and ultimately Mickey Mouse came to be.

Joseph Jacobs was born in Sydney to a Jewish family. His work went on to popularize some of the world's best known versions of English fairy tales including "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Goldilocks and the three bears", "The Three Little Pigs", "Jack the Giant Killer" and "The History of Tom Thumb"
