Guy Fawkes mask. The Guy Fawkes mask is a stylized depiction of Guy Fawkes, the best-known member of the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the House of Lords in London in 1605. The mask was designed by illustrator David Lloyd, and came to represent broader protest after it was used as a major plot element in V for Vendetta, published in 1982, and its 2006 film adaptation.

Argentina. Ernesto Guevara was born in Rosario, Argentina, the eldest of five children in an Argentine family of Spanish, Basque and Irish descent. His father, a staunch supporter of Republicans from the Spanish Civil War, often hosted many veterans from the conflict in the Guevara home.

Diggers. The Diggers were a group of Protestant radicals in England. Their original name came from their belief in economic equality based upon a specific passage in the Acts of the Apostles. The Diggers tried (by "leveling" land) to reform the existing social order with an agrarian lifestyle based on their ideas for the creation of small, egalitarian rural communities.

Emiliano Zapata Salazar (1879-1919) was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Morelos, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. When the Revolution broke out in 1910 he was positioned as a central leader of the peasant revolt in Morelos. Cooperating with a number of other peasant leaders he formed the Liberation Army of the South, of which he soon became the undisputed leader.

Ukraine. In 2004, Viktor Yanukovych, then Prime Minister, was declared the winner of the presidential elections, which had been largely rigged. The results caused a public outcry in support of the opposition candidate, Viktor Yushchenko. Thousands of protesters were demonstrating daily in Kiev, and many general strikes happened throughout the country. The protests succeeded when a revote was ordered by Ukraine's Supreme Court and the final results showed a clear victory for Yushchenko.

Iran. The 1953 Iranian coup d'état, known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup d'état , was the overthrow of the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favour of strengthening the monarchical rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 19 August 1953, orchestrated by the United Kingdom (under the name "Operation Boot") and the United States (under the name TPAJAX Project or "Operation Ajax") and the first United States covert action to overthrow a foreign government during peacetime.
