On 15 February 1971, the UK decimalised the pound sterling, replacing the shilling and penny with a single subdivision, the new penny. Under the old currency, the pound was made up of 240 pence, with 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound.

Dopiero 15 lutego 1971 Wielka Brytania przestawiła swój system walutowy na skalę dziesiętną. Do tego czasu 1 funt szterling dzielił się na 240 pensów, bądź na 20 szylingów. Ze względu na unię walutową zmiana dotyczyła także funta Republiki Irlandzkiej.

Erst am 15.o2.1971 („Decimal Day“) wurde das seit dem 9. Jahrhundert bestehende, auf dem karolingischen Münzsystem beruhende englische Münzsystem durch das international übliche Dezimalsystem ersetzt. Ein Pfund Sterling unterteilt sich seitdem in 100 Pence. Zuvor wurde ein Pfund Sterling in 20 Schilling und jeder Schilling in 12 Pence unterteilt, sodass ein Pfund 240 Pence entsprach.
