Homer is a legendary figure. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity, the most widespread being that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey.

Homer jest postacią legendarną, nie zachowały się żadne wiarygodne wiadomości o jego życiu. Zgodnie z przekazami był ślepcem, sam zresztą opisuje w Odysei: "A o mnie pamiętajcie ... ślepiec, który mieszka na skalistym Chios"

Homer gilt als Autor der Ilias und der Odyssee und damit als frühester Dichter des Abendlandes. Weder sein Geburtsort noch das Datum seiner Geburt oder das seines Todes sind zweifelsfrei bekannt. Es ist nicht einmal sicher, dass es Homer überhaupt gab. In der Antike wurde er oft als blinder Greis dargestellt.
