Dominions were semi-independent polities under the British Crown, constituting the British Empire, beginning with the Canadian Confederation in 1867. They included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, South Africa, and the Irish Free State, and then from the late 1940s also India, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

Pierwszym dominium brytyjskim była Kanada, która otrzymała taki status w 1867 roku. Kolejnymi były Australia (1901), Nowa Zelandia (1907), Nowa Fundlandia (1907), Związek Południowej Afryki (1910) i Wolne Państwo Irlandzkie (1922). Indie natomiast owego statusu nigdy nie posiadały (do niepodległości odzyskanej w 1947 były kolonią).

Als Dominion wurden ab Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts offiziell die sich selbst verwaltenden Kolonien sowie Irland innerhalb des Britischen Reiches bezeichnet. Das Wort wurde erstmals im modernen Sinne im Verfassungsgesetz von 1867 für das Dominion Kanada verwendet[1] und stammt aus einem Psalm der King-James-Bibel: „He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth“
