In English the term "calf" is used by extension for the young of various other large species of mammal. In addition to other bovid species, these include the young of camels, dolphins, elephants, giraffes, hippopotamuses, larger deer, rhinoceroses, porpoises, whales, walruses and larger seals.

Cielę, cielak to młode bydła domowego (choć nazwą tą określa się też młode niektórych innych ssaków, m.in. jeleni, bizonów, wielbłądów, słoni, żyraf, hipopotamów, nosorożców, fok, łosi, wielorybów, delfinów i niektórych płetwonogich). Narodziny cielaka nazywane są cieleniem.

Mit Kalb werden die Jungtiere vieler Herdentiere bezeichnet, zum Beispiel bei Rindern, Hirschen, aber auch Elefanten, Giraffen und Flusspferden; auch bei Meeressäugern, also bei Walen, Delphinen und Seekühen, ist diese Bezeichnung üblich.
