The mega-metropolis of more than 13 million inhabitants once had an utterly different name: Tokyo’s old name is Edo. What only fewer people know: It started out as a tiny fishing village in the 12th century. This, together with its location gave it the name, as Edo means coastal waters or estuary in Japanese. The name was changed to Tokyo in the light of the Meiji Restauration of 1868.

Tokio i (jap. 東京都 Tōkyō-to) – stolica Japonii i największe jej miasto. Stanowi największy obszar metropolitalny na świecie, położony na południowo-wschodnim wybrzeżu Honsiu. Do 1868 roku miasto nazywało się Edo. Nazwa Tōkyō oznacza „Wschodnia Stolica”.

Edo ist der frühere Name der japanischen Hauptstadt Tokio. Es war der Sitz des Tokugawa-Shōgunats, das Japan von 1603 bis 1868 beherrschte, und gab dieser Periode der japanischen Geschichte den Namen Edo-Zeit. Während dieser Zeit wuchs Edo zu einer der größten Städte der Welt.
