Orangutans live on only two islands, Borneo and northern Sumatra. They are a relic species. At the end of the Pleistocene period some 12,000 years ago, their range was much wider, encompassing southern China, Indochina, Java and southern Sumatra. The species is now extinct in all these regions.

Orangutany są gatunkiem reliktowym i występują jedynie na dwóch wyspach: Borneo i Sumatrze. 12000 lat temu, pod koniec plejstocenu, zasięg ich występowania był dużo większy, obejmujący całą południowo-wschodnią Azję.

Die Orang-Utans sind eine Primatengattung aus der Familie der Menschenaffen. Sie leben auf den südostasiatischen Inseln Sumatra und Borneo; die Bestände beider Inseln werden heute als drei getrennte Arten geführt: Borneo-Orang-Utan, Sumatra-Orang-Utan und der neu entdeckte Tapanuli-Orang-Utan.
