Climbing questions

On February 17, 1980, Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki, as the first alpinists in history, won the highest mountain in the world in winter - Mount Everest (8850 m). A 20-person, national expedition was led by the precursor of the winter himalism, Andrzej Zawada.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed on large boulders, small rock formations or artificial rock walls, without the use of ropes or harnesses. While it can be done without any equipment whatsoever, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry and provide a firmer grip, and bouldering mats to prevent injuries from falls

After the success, journalists persistently repeated the question which of the two men had the right to the glory of being the first one, and who was merely the second, the follower. Colonel Hunt, the expedition leader, declared: "They reached it together, as a team."

The mountain with an elevation of 1,675 m (5,495 ft) features the Earth's greatest purely vertical drop at 1,250 m (4,101 ft). This feature makes the site popular with climbers, despite its remoteness.

The name K2 is derived from the notation used by the Great Trigonometric Survey. Thomas Montgomerie numbered the most prominent peaks of Kararkoram K1 to K35. Next, these were replaced by local names, but K2 appeared not to have acquired a local name, possibly due to its remoteness.
