The Dolomites are a part of Southern Limestone Alps located in northeastern Italy. Marmolada (3342 m) is located about 100 kilometres north-northwest of Venice, from which it can be seen on a clear day.

Italy has 59.8 million inhabitants, which is more than Spain (46.7) and Portugal (10.5) combined. Greece's population is 10.8 million.

Lying mostly underwater, Campi Flegrei comprises 24 craters. It is one of the largest volcanoes in the world, capable of producing VEI 7 (super-colossal) eruptions. Its most recent eruption of 1538 created a new hill, Monte Nuovo.

These are Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli. There are several other volcanoes considered dormant, of which 7 erupted in historic times (Vulcano 1890, Isola Ferdinandea 1831, Campi Flegrei 1528, Ischia 1302, Larderello 1282, Lipari 729, Vulsini 104BC)

Mt Stromboli has been in almost one continuous eruption for the past 2000 years, which is the longest known in the world. The volcano explodes at intervals ranging from minutes to hours. This is known as Strombolian eruption type, also observed at other volcanoes worldwide.
