Australia previously held the distinction of holding a world record for most goals and highest winning margin in a IIHF World Championship game; they defeated New Zealand by a score of 58–0 in 1987, breaking the record held by Canada (47 goals against Denmark) since 1949. However this was surpassed in 2008 by the Slovakian women's team (82 goals against Bulgaria).

Modern lacrosse in Canada has been a popular sport since the mid 1800s. Only field lacrosse was played until the 1930s, when box lacrosse was invented. In 1994 Parliament passed the National Sports of Canada Act which declared lacrosse to be "Canada's National Summer Sport", with ice hockey as the National Winter Sport.

The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson's taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. It was eventually adopted by many other sports including hockey, football, water polo and team handball.

The trophy is named for Lord Stanley of Preston, a Governor General of Canada, who supported and promoted ice hockey. He awarded the first cup (then named Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup) to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club in 1893.

The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff winner.
