Until 1964, Lusaka's residents were European or Asian, as Indigenous Africans were allowed to live in the city. In 1964 Zambia gained independence amd Lusaka grew rapidly due to influx of Africans. By 1969, it became the center of anti-colonial resistance for Southern Africa. The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s major anti-apartheid organization, was headquartered in Lusaka.

Die Stadt wurde 1905 von europäischen Siedlern am Ort eines afrikanischen Dorfes gegründet und erhielt ihren Namen nach dessen Häuptling Lusakaa. 1935 wurde sie Hauptstadt der britischen Kronkolonie Nordrhodesien. Mit der Unabhängigkeit Sambias am 24. Oktober 1964 wurde Lusaka Hauptstadt des Landes.
