The Russian R-36 (NATO code: SS-18 Satan) is a family of intercontinental ballistic missiles designed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This missile was viewed by analysts as giving the Soviet Union first strike advantage over the U.S. It could be deployed with 10 warheads and up to 40 penetration aids. Contemporary U.S. missiles carried up to three warheads at most.
