Constantinople, called Miklagard by Vikings, hosted thousands of Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, who served as mercenaries of the Varangian Guard. They were famed for their battlefield skills and fierce, loyalty and drinking. They often fought for the Byzantine Empire, including fights with Arabs.
