Newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer gave money in his will to Columbia University to launch a journalism school and establish the Prize. The prizes are given annually to award achievements in journalism and photography, as well as literature and history, poetry, music and drama. The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in 1917.
