The first winter ascent of Mount Everest on 17 February 1980 was also the first winter summit of any of the world's fourteen 8000 metre peaks. After 1980 Poles did nine more first winter ascents on 8000 metre peaks, one of which was shared with an Italian climber Simone Moro. Only K2 remain unconquered in winter conditions.
