In 1961, the first black political prisoners were housed at Robben Island, and South Africa continued to use it as a prison until 1996. Mafadi is a peak on the border of South Africa and Lesotho. At a height of 3,450 metres, it is the highest mountain in South Africa, but is lower than Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m), the highest peak in Lesotho and Southern Africa.

The Zulu are the largest ethnic group in South Africa, with an estimated 10–12 million people living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho.

Bartolomeu Dias originally named the Cape of Good Hope the "Cape of Storms" (Cabo das Tormentas). It was later renamed (by King John II of Portugal) the Cape of Good Hope because it represented the opening of a route to the east.

The central area of Cape Town is called City Bowl. It is enclosed by near vertical cliffs of 1,000 m (3,300 ft) high Table Mountain, and Devil's Peak and Lion's Head on either side.
