The Copa Libertadores de América is the most prestigious club competition in South American football. The name "libertadores" refers to the principal leaders of the Latin American wars of independence from Spain and Portugal.

Footvolley was created in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach as a means for football players to be able to touch the ball without violating the formal football ban in 1965. Essentially footvolley is beach volleyball except players are not allowed to use their hands and a football replaces the volleyball. The game is similar to (and often confused with) futnet, a game with similar rules played on a tennis court.

FIFA forbids official matches above 2,500 meters because players may be at greater health risk due to decreased oxygen pressure. La Paz's Hernando Siles Stadium (pictured, 3,637 meters (11,932 feet) above sea level) is excluded from that regulation after intense lobbying by Bolivian authorities.
