Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) was a Swiss symbolist painter. Böcklin exercised an influence on Giorgio de Chirico and on Surrealist painters like Max Ernst and Salvador Dalí. When asked who was his favorite painter, Marcel Duchamp controversially named Arnold Böcklin as having a major influence on his art. Whether Duchamp was serious in this assertion is still debated.

The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km (14 mi) (2014), and covers about 81.7 km2 (31.5 square miles) (2011) in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of four smaller glaciers converging at Concordia Place. The whole area, including other glaciers is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001

Habsburg dynasty is a royal dynasty whose members became the hereditary rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, and held authority over the largest realm in Europe during the Renaissance. The Habsburgs originated in Swabia, a duchy of southwestern Germany. In 1246 they took control of the duchy of Austria.

Absinthe originated in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland in the late 18th century. It rose to great popularity as an alcoholic drink in early 20th-century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers. Absinthe drinkers included Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Edgar Allan Poe and Lord Byron.

The Rigi is a mountain massif of the Alps, located in Central Switzerland. The whole massif is almost entirely surrounded by the water of three different water bodies: Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz.

The Club of Rome describes itself as an organisation of individuals who share a common concern for the future of humanity, and strive to make a difference. It consists of current and former heads of state, UN bureaucrats, high-level politicians, scientists, economists, and business leaders from around the globe. Founded in 1968 at the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, Italy, it has been based in Winterthur, Switzerland since 2008.

In this incredible photograph we see the confluence of the Rhone and Arve rivers in Geneva, Switzerland. The river on the left is the Rhone, which is just exiting Lake Lehman. The river on the right is the Arve, which receives water from the many glaciers of the Chamonix valley before flowing north-west into the Rhone on the west side of Geneva, where its much higher level of silt brings forth a striking contrast between the two rivers.

Max Rudolf Frisch (1911- 1991) was a Swiss playwright and novelist. Frisch's works focused on problems of identity, individuality, responsibility, morality, and political commitment. The protagonist, Walter Faber, is a successful engineer traveling throughout Europe and the Americas on behalf of UNESCO.The novel was made into a 1991 film, Voyager, directed by Volker Schlöndorff.
