Chicago. The Britannica is the oldest English-language encyclopaedia still being produced (currently only in the online version). It was first published between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1901, after it was taken over by an American firm, the Britannica shortened and simplified articles to broaden its appeal in the North American market. Although publication has been based in the United States since 1901, the Britannica has largely maintained British spelling.

Mississippi, 1918. Compulsory education was not part of early American society, which relied instead on church-run private schools that mostly charged fees for tuition. Compulsory school attendance based on the Prussian model reached the American Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1852, and gradually spread other states until 1918. Mississippi was the last state to enact a compulsory attendance law.

New Haven. Yale University is found in New Haven, Connecticut. The university has produced 5 U.S. presidents, and many other notable alumni.
