The District of Columbia was founded on July 16, 1790, and in 1791 a new city named Washington, east of the existing Georgetown, was established within the district. In 1871 the governments of these two cities and of the rest of the towns of the district were unified into a single entity, D.C.

Miasto Waszyngton stanowiło pierwotnie odrębną jednostkę samorządową, znajdującą się na obszarze Terytorium Kolumbii. Dopiero uchwała Kongresu z 1871 zespoliła je z Terytorium, powołując do istnienia całość nazwaną Dystryktem Kolumbii.

El Distrito de Columbia fue fundado el 16 de julio de 1790, y en 1791 se oficializó, dentro del distrito, una nueva ciudad denominada Washington, al este de la ya existente Georgetown. En 1871 se unificaron los gobiernos de estas dos ciudades y del resto de poblaciones del distrito en una sola entidad, D. C.

Washington D.C. ist die einzige amerikanische Stadt, die nicht zu einem Bundesstaat gehört. Die Bezeichnung „D.C.“ steht für District of Columbia und benennt einen – besonderen – Verwaltungsdistrikt. Die Namen Washington D.C., District of Columbia oder D.C. bezeichnen daher stets die Hauptstadt der USA, die in keinem Bundesstaat liegt.
