Hindus consider the waters of the Ganges to be both pure and purifying. What the Ganges removes, however, is not necessarily physical dirt, but symbolic dirt; it wipes away the sins of the bather, not just of the present, but of a lifetime.

Hindusi wierzą, że wody Gangesu są czyste i oczyszczające. Kąpiel w Gangesie usuwa nie tylko fizyczny brud, ale także wszystkie skazy i grzechy na duszy. Niestety, Ganges w rzeczywistości jest bardzo zanieczyszczony i kąpiel w nim jest w istocie dość ryzykowna.

Den meisten indischen Religionen ist die Ganga, wie Inder den Ganges bzw. dessen Personifikation als Göttin nennen, heilig. Das Bad in ihm soll von Sünden reinigen und verspricht Absolution. Viele Hindus wollen nach Möglichkeit am Ganges sterben – vorzugsweise in Varanasi – und ihre Asche im Fluss verstreut wissen.
