The cervical spine is made up of 7 vertebrae. The first 2, C1 and C2, are highly specialized and are given unique names: atlas and axis, respectively. By the atlanto-axial joint, it forms the pivot upon which the first cervical vertebra (the atlas), which carries the head, rotates.

Kręg obrotowy, obrotnik (łac. axis) - drugi kręg szyjny mający tzw. ząb odchodzący od trzonu ku górze, w którym obraca się pierwszy kręg szyjny – dźwigacz. Obrotnik ma grube i silne blaszki, a jego otwór kręgowy jest duży, lecz mniejszy niż dźwigacza.
