Herostratus was a 4th-century BC Greek arsonist, who sought notoriety by destroying the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. His acts prompted the creation of a damnatio memoriae law, forbidding anyone to mention his name. Nevertheless, his name has become a metonym for someone who commits a criminal act in order to become noted.

Herostrates był owładniętym manią sławy szewcem z Efezu. Aby przejść do historii podpalił w 356 r. p.n.e. świątynię Artemidy (miniatura na zdjęciu), jeden z siedmiu cudów świata. Został za to skazany na śmierć i zapomnienie. Jednak jego imię przekazał potomnym jeden z historyków.

Herostratos war ein antiker ionischer Hirte, der als Brandstifter Berühmtheit erlangte. Sein Name wurde zum Synonym für einen Menschen, der aus Geltungssucht Kulturgüter zerstört oder andere irrationale Taten begeht. Als Herostrat wird dementsprechend ein Mensch bezeichnet, der Untaten begeht, allein um berühmt zu werden (Herostratentum).
