Lake Karachay is a small lake in central Russia. It is often referred to as the most polluted site on earth. Containing just one square mile of water, the lake formed a dumping ground for nuclear waste by for around 12 years.High level radioactive waste makes up almost the entire lake-bed to a depth of around 3.4 meters. Some areas surrounding the lake have radiation measurements of around 6 Sv/hour, which is enough to give a lethal dose to a human in as little as 30 minutes¹.

Jezioro Karaczaj znajdujace się na terenie Rosji, przez wielu naukowców uważane jest za najbardziej toksyczne na świecie. Komunistyczne władze postanowiły wpompować do zbiornika wodnego duże ilości płynnych odpadów radioaktywnych. Poziom promieniowania jest tu niezwykle wysoki. W latach 60' doszło do katastrofy - wiatr rozwiał pył zalegający na dnie (wówczas wyschniętego) jeziora i silnemu napromieniowaniu uległo prawie pół miliona osób.

Der Karatschai-See ist ein See im südlichen Ural in der Nähe der Stadt Kyschtym. Ab dem Jahre 1951 nutzte die Sowjetunion Karatschai als Lagerstätte für radioaktiven Abfall aus Majak, dem nahe gelegenen nuklearen Zwischenlager und Wiederaufbereitungsanlage, in der Nähe von Osjorsk. Laut einem Bericht des Worldwatch Institutes zu radioaktivem Abfall ist Karatschai der „am stärksten verschmutzte Ort“ der Erde.
