Maize has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with total production surpassing that of wheat or rice. However, not all of this maize is consumed directly by humans. Some of the maize production is used for corn ethanol, animal feed and other maize products, such as corn starch and corn syrup.

W roku 2007 na świecie zebrano 792 mln ton kukurydzy, 659 mln ton ryżu i 606 mln ton pszenicy. Reszta zbóż ma zdecydowanie mniejszy udział w globalnej produkcji.

Im Zeitraum 2017/18 wurden weltweit 1.033 Millionen Tonnen Mais, 745 Millionen Tonnen Reis und 721 Millionen Tonnen Weizen geerntet. Der Rest des Getreides hat einen viel geringeren Anteil an der globalen Produktion.
