The most difficult WW2 riddles

The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, also known as the Ghost Army, was the US Army unit responsible for fooling the Germans into believing that the D-Day landings would be at Pas-de-Calais, not Normandy. Their next assignment was to create a fake Mulberry harbor. After that, they were tasked with faking the existence of two 30,000 man Allied armies in France. They accomplished this with inflatable tanks and cars, dummy radio communication, valleys full of tents, and recordings of gunfire, talking, and mechanical sounds. The Germans never discovered the secret of the 23rd.

Hideki Tojo was a general of the Imperial Japanese Army and the Prime Minister of Japan during much of WW II. He was responsible for ordering the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war, Tojo was arrested, sentenced to death by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and hanged on December 23, 1948.

At that time, most of the armies used lighter and more efficient petrol engines, often taken from the aviation industry. Soviets, however decided to mass-produce diesel engines. There were several reasons: diesel fuel was less flammable and therefore safer, the Soviet Union had the huge aluminium forge capacity, and they didn't have large diesel-consuming fleet.

The first military night vision devices were introduced by the German Army as early as 1939. By the end of World War II, approximately 50-60 Panthers had been equipped with the infrared night-vision devices; also the "Vampir" man-portable system for infantry was used.

Anti-tank dogs were taught to carry explosives to tanks. The original idea was for a dog to release the bomb and return to the operator, but it was unsuccessful and replaced by an impact detonation procedure. The U.S. military trained anti-tank dogs in 1943 for use against fortifications, but never deployed them.

Prora was built by Nazi Germany as a beach resort on the island of Rügen, Germany, which is known for its colossal Nazi-planned tourist structures. The enormous building complex is 4.5 kilometres in length, and was built between 1936 and 1939.
