The convent was ruined in the 1755 Great Lisbon Earth­quake, which de­stroyed the city, killed possibly 100.000 of its in­hab­i­tants and dis­rupt­ed the colonial am­bi­tions of Por­tu­gal. The church was left un­re­stored to remind the tragedy.
